Sectarian tensions flare in Myanmar town

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) -- Tension was high in a northwestern Myanmar town late Sunday after Buddhist mobs torched two homes belonging to Muslims and security forces were placed on high alert.

Win Myaing, a government spokesman in the restive state of Rakhine, said the trouble started in the coastal town of Thandwe on Saturday after a Buddhist taxi driver told police he had been verbally abused by a Muslim small business owner while trying to park in front of his shop.

Thein Sein assigns 23 deputy ministers as Presidents Special Taskforce

Myanmar President Thein Sein has assigned 23 deputy ministers as Presidents Special Taskforce to deliver reforms more effectively, according to the press release on the President Offices website.

The President called a meeting with them on September 27, and he appointed the deputy ministers as the chairpersons of 26 newly formed Cabinet Sub-committees or the Delivery Units.

Political parties decide to seek public inputs to amend and/or redraft the constitution

The opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) and ethnic political parties in Myanmar issued a joint statement on Saturday saying the issue of amending the 2008 constitution or drafting a new one would be raised in Parliament depending on the desire of the public.

Ex-political prisoners detail torture methods at Insein

A group of former political prisoners held a press conference for the first time on Wednesday when they revealed how they were subjected to torture in Insein prison 23 years ago.
 
The former inmates said they were speaking out to commemorate the date, 25 September 1990, when Burmese security forces cracked down on Buddhist monks at Shwetaung Monastery in Rangoon’s Mingalar Taungnyunt township.
