Malaysia Hosts Philippines, MILF Meeting to Implement Peace Agreement

Members of the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front delegations join Malaysian officials in Kuala Lumpur to mark the start of meetings aimed at implementing peace between the two sides, Aug. 13, 2016.

The Philippines government and representatives of the rebel group Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) have agreed on a plan to implement a stalled peace agreement following a two-day meeting in Malaysia – the first such meeting since Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte took office in June.

In former times, Burmese and foreign observers considered Burma’s generals well versed at playing international powers off against one another.

Now it is Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma’s current de facto leader, who is visiting China. Many in the region, and in the West, will be assessing her diplomatic skills in engaging the Chinese and reconciling China’s interests in Burma with rising Western influence.

Erdogan's approval rating hits record high following failed coup: Poll

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

A recent survey has shown that the popularity of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has grown by over 20 percentage points in the wake of the July 15 failed coup attempt, a record high since he took office two years ago.

According to the poll conducted by the Ankara-based MetroPOLL Strategic and Social Research Center and based on 1,275 responses, 67.6 percent of the respondents said they supported the 62-year-old founder of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

US sanctions on independent states wrong, futile: President Rouhani

President Hassan Rouhani has criticized the United States for the imposition of economic sanctions against independent countries, saying such policy is wrong and futile.

“In the world’s trade and economic system, freedom of trade and economic relations should exist between countries within the framework of international regulations,” President Rouhani said in a meeting with Cuba’s Vice President of the Council of Ministers, Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, in Tehran on Saturday.
