MBMG Group’s Golf Charity Event

On Tuesday 14th May, MBMG Group hosted a Golf Charity Event at Bangpakong Riverside Country Club Golf Course, just outside Bangkok. The event was sponsored by Belmont Investments, Belvedere Management Limited, The Castle Trust Group and Miton Optimal Multi Asset Management.

The sweltering Thai sunshine didn’t put off an impressive 50 MBMG clients who kindly gave up their time to play a round for charity. One of the players was former Manchester United and England footballer Steve Coppell.  Ms Tor Edwards won the tournament and prizes were presented by MBMG Managing Partner Paul Gambles, MBMG Managing Director Graham MacDonald and Steve Coppell over dinner.

A programme for Manchester United versus Liverpool 1977 FA Cup Final programme, the one FA Cup winning medal garnered by Steve Coppell from his 3 final appearances, was auctioned, with Liverpool fan John Tolmie generously making the winning bid of 15,000 baht.

Overall the event made just over 70,000 Baht, which was split between the Good Shepherd Sisters in Bangkok, the Lotus Educational Fund, Jesters Care of Kids and The Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer. This included a donation from outgoing MBMG Group CEO Jan Sumanus. Jan explained, “I hadn’t intended to play at the event but one client was unable to make it. MBMG’s Managing Partner, Paul Gambles, persuaded me to make up the 4 ball by encouraging me with a series of double or quit bets on the putting practice green. Unfortunately for him by the time I sank 5 putts, an initial THB 350 bet had become over THB 5,000. With 1 more bet during the round, this doubled to over THB 11,000. On the final green I gave him a chance to win it back by a final bet on a 15 foot putt. Sadly for Paul, I managed to get it straight in the hole. Thanks to Paul’s generosity and my putting, our charities will benefit even more as I’d like them to benefit from this.”

Paul’s golf was also on the receiving end of a double-edged compliment from the event’s special guest. Steve Coppell noted, “Before today, I was worried that Paul’s golf would be better than mine – which frankly would be a worrying sign for someone who should be in the office running MBMG and dealing with clients every day. The good news for Paul’s clients is that, based on what I saw today, they really don’t need to worry!”

MBMG Group would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Steve Coppell, to all the sponsors, MBMG Group clients, friends, and to everyone who took part and helped out. A great day was had by all and we look forward to organising similar events in the future.
